It doesn’t have any way to combine currencies using an exchange rate. – Support for multiple currencies is weak. For example, it doesn’t have a good way to show you last month’s spending compared to the budget, nor does it allow you to roll over any unused budget to the next month or to a different category. – You cannot sort transactions by columns like date or amount or payee. Also, it has nice interface that allows you to drag a transaction onto a category to label it, but you have to click on the transaction twice first, which is a pain, and you can’t drag a category onto a transaction.
It just silently changes a bunch of transactions. On the downside, if you change the rule and ask it to redo the categorization, it does not let you preview which transactions it will apply to. You can also make a rule that if the payee is United Airlines and the account is my account then it’s a food expense and if the account is Derek’s account then it’s a work expense. For example, you can tell it that if the payee is Aral and the amount is < 10 euros then it’s food and if it’s more than 10 euros then it’s gas. It doesn’t learn per se, but it does have a pretty powerful language that you can use to write rules. + The automatic categorization works pretty well.– Have to manually upload my American accounts.+ Successfully downloaded my German accounts. Also, I think the company that makes it went bankrupt? And if I recall correctly, it only had a German version, not an English one? Still, there must be something easier to use. That said, I did not actually read the manual, so maybe it is possible and I just didn’t figure it out.

I couldn’t even figure out how to see all expenditures in a category. It seems there is no way to set up a budgeting category outside the 9 fixed categories it offers, and there seems to be no way to see the total spent per category except for a specific month. I only played around with it a little, but I found its “tag” rather than “categorize” approach a bit mystifying, and its budgeting capabilities seem truly primitive. Next I tried Outbank, which was a bit better, but still basically unusable. I didn’t document any details though, and I no longer remember exactly what the issues were. But I hope not.įirst I tried finanzblick but the interface was so awful I gave up after just a few minutes of playing around with it.
BANKTIVITY NOT DOWNLOADING SOFTWARE
I might end up having to use one of the German apps to automatically download my German accounts and then export those transactions manually and manually import them to another American software to do all my budgeting and reporting.
BANKTIVITY NOT DOWNLOADING UPDATE
I haven’t yet found one app that meets all my needs, but I’ll update this post once I figure out which one I’m going to use. So far I’ve tested out four German apps ( finanzblick, Outbank, MoneyMoney, and iFinance) and two American apps ( MoneyWiz and Banktivity).

The best overall review was this excellent review of mac financial apps by thesweetsetup. I started by searching for candidates on Toytown and the internet in general, including on German review sites, but I didn’t find too much.
I really want something that will “learn” how to categorize transactions based on my previous tagging, and make it easy to see how much money I’ve spent in a category (as well as the specific transactions) over any time frame I specify.īonus features: automatically downloads my US accounts, has decent search, sorting and reporting features, handles multiple currencies well, automatically backs itself up, and can automatically sync between multiple devices (at a minimum my computer and Derek’s computer, but ideally also our iphones). I’m still trying to find the best option, but below I’ll document what I’ve tried out so far.įirst of all, my minimum requirements: I am only interested in software that does automatic downloading of my German accounts via HBCI, and that works on my Mac. To assist me in creating and tracking a budget, I decided to find a piece of financial software that will automatically download my transactions from both my American and German bank accounts and credit cards. It’s a new year and one of my resolutions is to get my finances in order.
